WE STEAL THE NIGHT (THE NIGHT STEALS US)

Night doesn’t steal
The light because it is
Her own.
Like maps where
Demarcation lines
Are drawn between
Black and white
Joy and solitude
Good and evil
Light and darkness.
It is the stars, the moon,
The city lights, our wandering
And lost souls that
Steal her darkness away.
We vandalize her satin
Dress and steal her
Show of calm and quiet
Beauty.
We trespass on her
Territory and disturb
Her peace.
We violate her nakedness.
But night,
she never cries.
She allows the crime.
Little did we know
Night finds her way to
Reside in our unguarded hearts.
She grows spots of
Black poppies on
The sky of our hearts.
She steals the sunshine
From their happy valleys
And plains of contentment.
In her silence,
Night cunningly
takes revenge.
You see, our hearts
Were never meant for darkness.
Now it has day and night.

REGGAE

the sky is a sheet of silk laced
with spots and streaks of fluffy
cottons. the water curls and breaks
on the sand so lovingly and gently
that the sand glitters at each
kiss. the air smells of grilled
fish and pork while soda and
beer come cold in ice melting
into thin air that you could see
them dissipating as they touch
your lips. the trees oblige to
the wind, casting dancing shadows
on your skin where the sun play-
fully draws lines, contouring the
edges of your tank top on your
back and slowly burning them into
a darker hue of brown. you raise your
head, close your eyes, feel the burn
of the sun lusting on your nape, and
get lost in the soundtrack of the moment.
it’s a good day for reggae.

RAIN

It’s been days.
The earth is damp.
The leaves rejoice
In the swell
Of morning dew
That gently slide
On their hair.
In the coldness
Of dawn
Solitary souls wander
In spaces
Where the sunshine
Hides
Like the roots
Of trees digging
The earth for water.
The treess are happy
On days like these.
People are not.

BROKEN HEART

It wanders in
Malls for new shoes
And Larsian barbeque
For a feast.
It tugs the feet
To long walks
Along avenues or
To trips from one
Seven-eleven to another
Nighttime hoping
The man on
The television was
Wrong about the weather.
It sighs over cappuccino
Under a moon
That hides half its face
As if it doesnt know
The answers.
It stares at ceilings
Replaying movie scenes
That almost seemed real
Yesterday.
It tires itself for nights
Of wailing
While outside the
Jeepney roars like
The day that has been
Was ordinary.
It wakes up
And finds the sun too bright.
It will take time
For the heart to
Welcome once again
The light behind the curtains.
But it will come.
